A Model Farm Rooted in Nature. La Reserva el Jaguar is not like any other farm: it is the starting point of the Treerich project. On this family farm, forest protection, agroforestry and specialty coffee production have always gone hand in hand, proving that high-quality coffee can be produced while conserving, and even enhancing, natural ecosystems. From this experience came the desire to share the model with neighboring farms and build a network committed to the same vision. Today, El Jaguar remains the reference, setting the direction, methodology and standard of excellence for all Treerich partner farms.
Located at 1,300 - 1,400 m in the Isabelia mountain range, Jinotega, Nicaragua, the farm cultivates around 50 hectares of Rainforest Alliance-certified specialty coffee within an agroforestry system, surrounded by 110 hectares of protected cloud forest. It is led by Liliana Chavarría, Georges Duriaux and their son Jean-Yves, who combine coffee excellence with a deep commitment to environmental protection and long-term biodiversity research, particularly in ornithology.

La Reserva El Jaguar is run by Liliana Chavarría, Georges Duriaux and their son Jean-Yves. Together, they have built a model that combines coffee excellence with a deep commitment to environmental protection and long-term biodiversity research, particularly in ornithology. It was on their farm that the Treerich project was born, and their way of working still sets the direction and standard for all Treerich partner farms.
Jean-Yves, specialist in regenerative agriculture, guides the cultivation at El Jaguar, working in harmony with natural cycles to optimize plant health and quality. Georges is closely involved in the process, from checking the green coffee during drying to overseeing quality. Day to day, the family works alongside a close team. Caring for the seedlings, organize the work and run the depulping station.
The family's commitment reaches beyond their own farm. In collaboration with Audubon, they supported ten neighboring small-scale producers with coffee seedlings and companion trees, offering to purchase their coffee without obligation to ensure full independence. Together with The Missing Bean, a long-time roasting partner, they also brought environmental education to local children through bird observation and nature-based activities.
"El Jaguar functions as model where we protect forest trough coffee."
— Jean-Yves DuriauxAt La Reserva El Jaguar, coffee and forest grow side by side. The farm cultivates around 50 hectares of Rainforest Alliance-certified coffee within an agroforestry system, surrounded by 110 hectares of protected cloud forest that make it one of Nicaragua's most important places for birdlife. The family's commitment reaches beyond their own land: together with Audubon, they help neighboring producers restore forest cover while growing high-quality specialty coffee, and with The Missing Bean they bring environmental education to local children.
